Or do you want the cube to have a more solid back and floor, like the cubes in Block Party (page 43), which are only open in the front and top? These are design considerations. It is your quilt, but you need to make these decisions before you start cutting.

tip

Carpenters always say, “Measure twice; cut once.” But we find that when we are designing, we often measure once and cut twice. It is okay to rethink things as you go along. For example, Block Party represents the final product of our trials, and there were many.

When cubes are interlocked, they look very complicated. Though they are more tedious to assemble than hollow cubes, you need only have one set in your quilt to make a powerful design statement. The addition of other cubes (hollow and otherwise) creates even more interest and complexity. Once again, a little bit of extra work goes a long way.

If you want to ease the assembly of your quilt and are piecing these interlocking cubes into a kaleidoscope design, it is a little more straightforward to align them with the half hexagons. (Each half hexagon uses three triangles on the graph paper.) As you interlock the cubes, you may create a design that doesn’t do this. No problem. It simply means that you will have to piece in a little hexagon fabric. Because you have already worked this design out on graph paper, you know where these pieces need to be included. Block Party features interlocking cubes that fall only on the half-hexagon lines.
